Wittlich Fasching

In the region in which we live in Germany, they celebrate Fasching right before Lent, a lot like Mardi Gras in New Orleans. This is a very Catholic region. This particular area has a women's day. The women leaders of the city get together. They take a ladder and climb into City Hall. they demand the keys to the city. They cut off the ties of any men who sport them. And they declare that the city is theirs for the rest of Fasching.
I attended a Fasching parade and celebration in Wittlich. They actually put the Mayor in a cage. Lots of children attend the parade and candy is thrown out. Many dress up... adults especially.

At the end of the ceremony, the band plays on and everyone sings and dances while more candy is thrown to the crowds.
