Warsaw: Saski Park

We visited this green park in the heart of town on a Sunday afternoon. It was full of families out for a stroll. What a wonderful natural resource for the big city. This fountain is quite old. Other restauration was taking place while we were there.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lies in this park.

Warsaw Churches

St. John's Basilica is one of the oldest in the city. Restored and rebuilt as most of the inner city was destroyed in WWII.
Bookstore across from St. John's Basilica.

Church of the Assumption
St. Joseph
St. Ann's Church. One of the most beautiful

A Protestant church. Holy Trinity. Most churches here are Catholic.

Holy Cross Church - taken over by the Nazis during WWII and all but destroyed. Now rebuilt.

Chopin's heart is buried at this church.

Pope John Paul was from Poland. He is honored here.

Warsaw: The Royal Palace

A highlight in Warsaw: walking through the Royal Palace, seeing many of its' treasures.

A large square is outside the Royal Palace with the tallest statue in Europe.

Warsaw: The Old Town

The Old Town of Warsaw was almost completely destoyed in WWII and has been painstakingly rebuilt, brick by brick. It is now a historical monument and used for many festivals and tourist opportunities. It gives a marvelous flavor of old Warsaw in it's glory.

Shades of the military past.

Warsaw: the old Jewish Quarter reclaimed

We stayed in the old Jewish quarter in a new hotel. However, there are very few Jews left in Warsaw. It was staggering to learn that the thriving community of about 400,000 was wiped out by the Germans in WWII. We wandered to a Jewish cemetary that existed since the 1700s. A few plots were dedications to those who died in WWII. Most graves were from older days.

This is the last existing gate to the Jewish quarter. It was 2 blocks from our hotel.

Upon entrance to the cemetary, Bob was handed a head covering to wear.

Nature has reclaimed this place. Spiders, rust, and overgrown bushes.

The old gate.

We stayed at the brand new Hilton for free using our Hilton Honors points. Since there are almost no Jews left in Warsaw, it is now being newly developed.
