Warsaw: Traces of Communism

The Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw is striking on the city scape (the upper right of above photo). It was a gift from the Soviets, used for communist party meetings, etc. Today it has several cultural theatres and museums as well as office space.

In the old city we found several wood carvers. We asked one where he learned his magnificent trade. He said, "it's my job, it's what I'm supposed to do." It sounded like a communist party line to me.

The above square and this fountain were created under communism in Poland. This Warsaw Uprising Museum is a sensory experience depicting the double occupation of WWII when Germany and the Soviets both fought for occupation and decimated Poland. It is a sobering experience of war, fear and sadness.

We saw some soviet symbols on souvenirs. Diane bought a fur hat. There was also a "secret service" agency. This had to be an old sign or was now a private investigation firm.
