Vianden Castle in Luxembourg

Only 30 miles from our house, we drove to Luxembourg on a snowy January day to explore this castle that has Roman roots from the 3rd century. It has been added to through the years. The main parts preserved today are from the 12th and 13th century. French author, Victor Hugo, loved and admired it. From 1820 it was sold off piece by piece and became ruins. It was restored after 1977.

We visited around our son's birthday. It inspired his birthday cake I made, pictured at the bottom.

You go through 5 arches to get in. We especially loved the rough slabs of rock the castle foundation is based on.

The most impressive room to our son was was the knights hall.

From the upper rooms there is a nice view of the town in the river valley.

Tapestries kept castles warm

Exiting the castle, looking up, the additions through the years becomes obvious.
