Berchtesgaden: the town

Mountains surround Berchtesgaden on every side. It feels like the heart of the German Alps and all that Americans think of as "Germany."
Our first night to town, seeking supper, we were entertained by young slap dancers. We thought this only happens in the movies!

Downtown a statue of a mother and child pouring water is joined by two girls.

Painting around windows and on buildings are common throughout Bavaria.

The winding roads out of Berchtesgaden invite you to explore.

Ramsau has a lovely river that runs through it. A tunnel leads to the town.

Berchtesgaden has a salt mine museum. It was mined since the Middle Ages. The tour is fantastic. Most impressive was the multiple forms of transportation within the mine. Train, cable car, boat, a wooden slide...

We stayed at the Hotel - Gasthof Gebirgshäusl, in Bischofswiesen a few km down the road. Though we didn't book a suite, they must have had one available and gave us one. It was lovely. You will find my hotel review at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ under the user name lahlumdi. The hotel webpage is http://www.gebirgshaeusl.de/index.php?en_willkommen I booked it through http://www.activehotels.com/
