Obersalzberg : The Hitler Connection

Hitler, originally from Austria, established a home base in the Berchtesgaden area in the town of Obersalzberg where he could see his homeland from the mountain tops. On his 50th birthday, friends gave him "Eagle's Nest" which is a lodge. You can only get to it by a long elevator after a long drive up the mountain. He hated heights and only went there to impress important leaders where were his guests.

A cross with an Edelweiss flower was put up there a few year's ago. The above building is built on the foundation of a guesthouse from the Hitler complex. Allied troops destroyed the buildings concerned it would become a neo-nazi magnet. It is now a museum called the Documentation Center. It has predominately photos, maps, movie clips and letters from the Hitler era.

Bunkers underground show the defense system Hitler developed. Miles and miles of tunnels linked the above ground complex. It even contained bedrooms, kitchens and telephones.
