Neuschwanstein Castle

How many photos can I take of the most photographed castle in the world? Almost every travel book on Germany has this castle on the cover! It is next to the Austrian boarder in Southern Germany near the town of Fussen. 10,000 people come here daily. Disney patterned it's fairy tale castle based on Neuschwanstein.

Neuschwanstein was built by King Ludvig in the 1800s. He was a romantic sort... and the castle was never completed. The photo of the yellow castle further down was his parent's home, where he grew up. It is all on the same grounds. We rode a bus up to St. Mary's Bridge for this stunning view of the castle. From all the photos I've seen, I never realized the large lakes in the area beyond the castle.

We enjoyed the hiking trails.

This lovely lake is on the castle grounds.

Neuschwanstein Castle is near Fussen, Germany. This town has a fascinating town square, decorated church and an aqua colored river.

We stayed in Ruette, Austria at the Maximilian Hotel. It was about a 20 minute drive and this was a more peaceful area to stay than Fussen. You will find my hotel review at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ under the user name lahlumdi
